How games are rated

The Indie Game Spotlight system uses a 3 out of 3 system looking at the four categories: Play Ability (Does the game open, run well or not, any glitches ect) Player Comprehension (Does the story make sense and can I as the player Understand what’s going on) Game Flow (Does the game pace make sense for the story, introductions and mechanics or is it too slow or fast) Overall Enjoyment (Pretty self explanatory, how do I feel about the game)

Each category is based off 1-3; with 1 being the least of the category, 2 is on par with minor issues 3 is on par or exceeds category with no issues.

Cover Judgements

This was a really interesting game for me! The idea of combining golf with a long harrowing adventure is such a unique concept and could go any number of ways!

Play-ability

During my initial launch of the game There was a little bit of lag And a slight rise in computer fan speed However it eventually evened out and everything ran relatively smoothly up until the actual golfing levels. The levels load kind of laggy. When changing ball color the first time, the game crashes. I tried to recreate the events and it did not happen again so it seemed to just be a one time thing. I had the same issue wth the warp power up – only on first use, camera went off screen into the woods which caused the game to freeze. Unfortunately I could not repeat the glitch. In the beginning map there is a lot of odd boundaries where there seems to be invisible entities and there are spaces where the player can’t turn left or right. (2/3)

Player Comprehension

When it comes to player comprehension I was a little confused during my game play. In the beginning when you first open up the game you are offered some type of tutorial as written form. During the golfing levels There is a little cheat sheet on the right side that gives you some of the button commands to get through the level. This right here though would be a very good place to have an interactive tutorial level! I think having each hole to carefully explain the different mechanics, powerups and basic rules of golf (enough to play the game) Would ultimately fix this category almost completely. As you walk around the village there are some people you can talk to but at this stage in development there’s not much. If I were to take away the game description, gametrailer and go into the game knowing absolutely nothing, I don’t believe that I would be able to understand anything at all that’s going on other than a village is hardcore about golf. (1/3)

Game Flow

The game flow for Albatross is a little jarring at this stage in development. Currently when you go onto the golfing stage it’s an immediate transition and you’re immediately thrown onto the first hole. It’s very much a “blink and you’ll miss it” with no prior conversations or signs properly warning you what you’re about to enter. (1/3)

Overall Enjoyment

I will say that despite what the game currently lacks and doesn’t have, This was still an enjoyable experience. You can see that they’re trying to go into a direction that takes this game beyond a normal golfing-sim type game. The effort is there, and I respect that! (3/3)

Final Thoughts

Keep the quest for albatross in your line of sight! Although currently the game is a little ROUGH Around the edges, (See what I did there?) This game is definitely on its way to being something special. It’s on its way to being a great adventure that will tell a tale for generations! A lot of the things that I mentioned in this review can be an easy fix! But to have a full golfing mechanic working this well in such an early stage of development is such an amazing feat and not something to be discredited. Whether you understand the concept of golf or not I highly encourage you to give this game a try! It’s very entertaining and the underlying vibes of something much greater is there and I hope through your playthrough you can feel it too! (3/3)
